Darkness Assassin (Tank) 7.8+

By [Sirk]Usaska

In my opinion, the Darkness Assassin is one of the best tank classes in the game right now. It is incredibly capable, even allowing you to solo tank NiM bosses like Dash’roode and Titan 6 when played to its full potential.

Skill Tree & Tactical Flexibility

The Darkness tree is completely situational. I often change my setup depending on the specific encounter. If you are in an Operation with me, I will guide you through the specific tweaks for that boss.

You should aim to carry 4–5 different tacticals, as switching them can make specific fight mechanics significantly easier.

Stat Priority & Gear Setup

Unlike Powertechs or Juggernauts, Assassin tanks naturally have high defensive layers, allowing for a unique stat distribution.

Accuracy

  • 2694 Accuracy (110%)
Crucial for ensuring your threat-generating attacks and taunts never miss.

Shield & Absorb

  • Shield: 5000 – 5500
  • Absorb: All remaining tertiary stats.

Legendary Implants

  • DPS Focus: [Second Wind] and [Dynamic Force]
  • Tank Focus: [Force Resistance] and [Ballast Point]

Tacticals (Situational)

  • Standard: [Ward of the Continuum] or [Overwhelming Offense]
  • Fight Specific: [Two Cloaks], [Shroud of the Shadows], or [Friend of the Force]

High-Threat Opener

One of the main challenges of tanking is generating enough threat to stay ahead of high-burst DPS (like Lightning Sorcerers hitting 50k+ openers). For Darkness, the fix is simple:

  1. Force Pull: Use this to open the fight. It generates over 100k threat immediately, making it easy to keep the boss aggro’d.
  2. Dark Ward: Always keep this active. It is self-explanatory but vital—it acts as your primary shield and is the reason you can run slightly lower shield stats than other tanks.

Core Rotation (Threat Priority)

Follow this order to maximize threat generation and damage mitigation. Use abilities 1 through 8 in sequence; Saber Strike is only used as a filler to regenerate Force.

  1. Force Pull (Opener/Aggro)
  2. Wither
  3. Shock
  4. Depredating Volts
  5. Maul (on proc)
  6. Lacerate (for AOE threat)
  7. Assassinate (when available)
  8. Saber Strike (Force management only)

Playstyle Notes

  • Aggro Management: Do not rely solely on your taunt. Use your high-threat abilities (Wither/Shock) early and often.
  • Mitigation: Keep Dark Ward stacks up at all times to maintain your “tankiness” to the max.
  • Versatility: Don’t be afraid to swap tacticals between bosses. An Assassin’s greatest strength is their utility toolkit.
